Guide on Wedding Garter

I'm sure you are familiar with bride tossing of the hand bouquete to the unmarried female guests at the wedding right? We are all love that moment.

At modern weddings, the removing and tossing of the garter is now the privilege of the groom at the reception. He tosses the garter to the unmarried male guests at the wedding. It is thought that catching the garter will bring you good luck and in, some cases, indicate that you will be married next.

The history of wedding garter

The origin of the garter toss at weddings derives from a 14th-century tradition in France. Back then, the bride and groom had to show proof of consummating the marriage after the wedding night. The friends and family of the couple would stay in the room and obtain the wedding garter as 'proof' of the consummation. Very interesting huh?

So, how should you wear it?

You may choose to wear your garter on either your left or your right leg based on your personal preference. Many brides choose to wear two garters: one to toss, and one to keep. If this is the case, you should wear both garters on the same leg with the tossing garter placed lower than the keeper garter.

Tossing garter

As it says, it means to be tossing away. The bride will sit on a chair, while the groom will run his hands on the brides legs, under her dress, catch the tossing garter, take it off from her leg and toss it away to all of the unmarried male guests.

If you are feeling uncomfortable with the tought of the groom going under your wedding dress and taking off the tossing garter infront of hundreds of people, you can try this alternatives:

  1. Do it at the after party, wehre it's only you and your small circle, so you can be as crazy as you want to. The groom can do it as goofy or sexy as it can be.

  2. Prepare your tossing garter and put it in a box, as a gift to the bestman (if he's unmarried) or you can give it to one of the unmarried groomsmen.

Keeper garter

While for the keeper garter, you can wear it on your wedding day and keep wearing it, until it's the time for the groom to take it off on your intimate hot steamy night -you know what I mean ;)
